The university, initially named Andhra Pradesh Open University, was established on August 26, 1982, by an Act of the A.P. State Legislature (APOU Act 1982). The Andhra Pradesh government subsequently changed the university’s name to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University on October 26, 1991.
With the founding of this university—the first of its type in India—the Andhra Pradesh government began an era of affirmative action. It provided opportunities for higher education to all societal segments in response to the shifting demands of the individual and the community. The University Grants Commission (UGC) in New Delhi has recognised the university and accredited all its programmes.
