Let’s take a look at how IGNOU operates through its regional centres, learner support centres, and the various academic services it offers.

IGNOU: Inclusive and Equitable Education for All

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) was established in 1985. It offers a range of academic courses at a highly affordable rate. Apply for admission online, and upon confirmation, begin with self-paced learning after an induction course. You only need to appear for examinations in person at the allotted exam centres and for practicals if relevant for your chosen subject. Access digital/printed learning materials and contact your regional or student support centres if you have any queries. It is important to submit your assignments on time; failing to do so, IGNOU does not allow candidates to appear for examinations. What Documents Do I Need To Register At An IGNOU Regional Centre, And How Long Does It Take To Get A Confirmation?

Are you planning to take admission at IGNOU? If so, are there certain documents that you need to submit at the IGNOU regional centre to register for the course and confirm your seat? IGNOU conducts an admission drive online. You need to first create an ABC-ID (Academic Bank of Credit-ID) at the SAMARATH portal to apply for online/distance programmes at IGNOU.

Begin the registration process online by logging into the official website. There is no need to apply separately for registration for the IGNOU regional centre. Here is how you start the registration process for UG & PG IGNOU courses and choose the IGNOU regional centre.

1. Create your ABC-ID at the SAMARTH portal.

2.Visit the IGNOU online admission system at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in.

3.Click New Registration and create your account using a valid email and mobile number.

4.Choose your desired programme.

5.Choose your regional and study centres.

6.Fill out all the required personal and academic details.

7.Upload the required documents.

  • Scanned passport-size photograph (less than 100 KB)
  • Scanned Signature (less than 100 KB)
  • All the supporting documents (proof of Date of Birth, relevant mark-sheets, degree certificates, caste certificate, income certificate, disability certificate, UGC NET-JRF certificate/UGC-NET scorecard, etc.) (less than 500KB)

8. Pay the fees using debit/credit or online payment methods.

9. Submit the application and download the acknowledgement.

10. Wait for admission confirmation. An SMS would be sent to your mobile number in addition to your email message registered with the system.

Regarding the time frame for getting confirmation of your admission, the admission forms are submitted through the online IGNOU admission system. The forms are first checked and confirmed for admission, subject to the fulfilment of the eligibility criteria for the chosen course. The admission forms are processed region-wise on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. Therefore, depending on the number of applicants from the respective regions, the time required to process forms across regional centres may vary.

How to Check Registration and Admission Status at IGNOU?

You can verify the status of your registration and admission through the official “Know Your Status” service. IGNOU provides you with an enrollment number upon completion of your registration process. Enter the enrollment number and the programme code for the course you have applied for admission to. The system would itself display the details of your application status, electives, centre, and admission confirmation.

How Do IGNOU Regional Centres Differ From Study Centres, and Which One Should I Contact for Admissions?

To offer you a seamless online and distance learning process for lakhs of students across India, IGNOU has two different kinds of centres – IGNOU regional centres and IGNOU study centres. But how do these two centres differ from each other? Also, in case you are curious about any admission details, which centre should you contact? Let’s answer all your queries.

Let’s clarify the difference between the two in simple and precise points. An IGNOU regional centre is a larger administrative body that serves as your point of contact with the main institution, located in Delhi. The IGNOU regional centres are full-time administrative offices of the university in each state. Their primary role is to oversee the operations of LSCs (Learner Support Centres), or study centres falling under their jurisdiction. Have a look at the various roles and responsibilities of regional centres (RCs) that function through student support Centres (LSCs) in their designated regions. The Regional Services Division supports and monitors the regional centres so that they effectively carry out their duties.

On the other hand, the IGNOU study centre is also known as the Learner Support Centre (LSC). It functions under the regional centre to offer academic and administrative services to you in any region of a state. While there are 58 IGNOU regional centres, there are 2382 Learner Support Centres that make it easier and more accessible for you to access the student services. The regional centre organises different activities that we shall discuss next at these learner support centres to offer a more accessible and easy-to-approach learning pathway. Let’s have a look at the different roles and responsibilities of the regional centre and how it undertakes them via study centres.

  • Hosting different sorts of regional events, meetings, trainings & orientation programmes
  • Organising academic counselling sessions for theory courses
  • Organising practicals and project viva voce via face-to-face and online modes
  • Handling assignment submissions and grading
  • Transmitting awards in offline mode and online mode for ODL and online programmes
  • Visiting/monitoring TEE (term-end examination) centres and facilities
  • Visiting/monitoring entrance exam centres and facilities
  • Handling students' queries through various modes such as Post, Email, Phone, iGRAM face-to-face queries, Facebook, Twitter, RTI, and Court Cases
  • Organising grievance redressal camps in online and face-to-face modes
  • Organising research and professional development activities

In short, the Regional Services Division at IGNOU monitors the 58 regional centres, which in turn provide the best academic and administrative services to online/distance learners through 2382 learner support centres. A regional centre would oversee how many LSCs are allocated based on the number of students and the area of the region.
