What is NIRF?

NIRF stands for National Institutional Ranking Framework which was approved by the MHRD and launched by the Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development in September 2015. It is an evaluation system started by the Government of India to rank higher educational institutions in India. The rankings are released every year in different categories including overall, university level, colleges, research institutions, management, engineering, pharmacy, and others.

The Ministry of Education has defined five parameters based on which the higher education institutions are ranked. This framework creates healthy competition among universities/colleges and encourages them to enhance their overall quality.

What are the Parameters of NIRF Rankings?

The parameters for the respective disciplines like management, engineering, pharmacy and others may differ.  The five parameters of NIRF ranking as the Ministry of Education are as follows:

1. Teacher, Learning, and Resources (TLR)

  • Student strength including doctoral students (SS)

  • Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR)

  • Combined metric for faculty with PhD (or equivalent) and experience (FQE)

  • Financial resources and their utilisation (FRU)

2. Research and Professional Practice (RP)

  • Combined metric for publications (PU)

  • Combined metric for quality of publications (QP)

  • IPR and patents: Published and granted (IPR)

  • Footprint of projects and professional practice (FPPP)

3. Graduation Outcomes (GO)

  • Metric for university examinations (GUE)

  • Metric for number of PhD students who graduated (GPHD)

4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)

  • Percentage of students from other states/countries

  • Percentage of women

  • Economically and socially challenged students (ESCS)

  • Facilities for physically challenged students (PCS)

  • Perception ranking (PR)

5. Peer perception

  • Academic peers and employers (PR)
