About the Course

This 12-week comprehensive course from IIT Bombay offered through NPTEL, focuses on characterising the behaviour of structures under dynamic loads, such as earthquakes, impacts, and blasts. Students will learn to idealise structures as simplified single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) systems. The course covers developing equations of motion for SDOF systems under periodic, non-periodic, and arbitrary excitations. Numerical methods for obtaining dynamic responses and their limitations are discussed. Additionally, the concept of earthquake response spectrum and design spectrum is explained, highlighting their utility in the seismic analysis and design of structures.
