The University of Madras started the Institute of Distance Education in 1981 to help people learn without attending regular classes. It has been running for more than 25 years now. The institute offers a variety of courses, including 16 undergraduate, 22 postgraduate, 19 diploma, and 16 certificate programs. These courses follow a credit-based system, CBCS, approved by UGC. Students can join these programs at different times, either at the start of the academic year or the calendar year. The institute aims to make education accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances so they can achieve their goals.
