Panjab University (PU), one of India's oldest universities, was founded in 1882 in Lahore (now in Pakistan), and has a long history of seeking excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts, and sports. Panjab University, with its campus in Chandigarh and roughly 202 affiliated institutions throughout Punjab state and Chandigarh U.T., has distinguished itself in serving diverse social requirements in independent India. Having started its journey in 1971 as Directorate of Correspondence Courses to becoming a Centre for Distance and Online Education, it has come a long way in becoming one of the pioneer institutes in distance education in North India over a period of five and a half decades.
